The former boss of supermarket chain Morrisons has emerged as a frontrunner to take the reins at B&M following its chief executive’s departure.
David Potts, who was chief executive at Morrisons from 2015 to 2023, is reported to be a prime candidate.
Potts is reported to have been in talks with B&M for weeks over potentially taking the lead role at the discount retailer, after Alex Russo recently stepped down.
Two sources with knowledge of the situation told The Times that no final decision has been made and an appointment may not be finalised for several weeks.
Potts’ experience includes a nearly 40-year stint at Tesco, working his way up from a deli counter to managing its Asian operations.
Following that, he took the helm at Morrisons and remained until 2023, a year after it was taken private.
The Sunday Times reported earlier this year that Potts had a plan to take over The Range but this was rejected by its founder Chris Dawson.
B&M has reported a period of difficult trading as profits have been declining. Russo’s departure was announced after a profit warning between £605m and £625m this year, down from a previous forecast of up to £650m.
